Xerox Invents "Erasable Paper"

From the "how the heck did they do that" department come this news: Xerox has invented a paper that actually erases itself. The company's scientists - realizing that most paper documents are used only for a short time - created a paper that retains images for a day before they disappear. It's just one of their many "green products" which they have appropriately called "erasable paper." Patent pending.

This innovation is sure to please the environmentalists (which is no easy task for a paper/printer company) but it could also eventually provide businesses with an extremely cost-efficient solution for their printing needs - "eventually" being the operative word.

"While potential users have shown interest in transient documents, there is still much to be done if the technology is to be commercialized. "This will remain a research project for some time,' said Eric Shrader, PARC area manager, industrial inkjet systems.'' Our experiments prove that it can be done, and that is the first step, but not the only one, to developing a system that is commercially viable."

Behold the Universal Printer Driver (well, sort of)

"Why can't there be one universal printer driver that knows where you are, finds the printer you need and just prints the job?"

Seems like a reasonable question from Robert Mitchell over at Computerworld.com. In his recent product review, Mitchell aims to determine the "universatility" (not his word) of the Xerox's Mobile Express Driver and HP's Universal Print Driver.

His conclusion: close, but no cigar.

"There's a rather big catch in each case," he writes. "Mobile Express works only with printers that use the PostScript page description language. It won't work with any other printers, including those that use HP's popular PCL format. Meanwhile, HP's UPD works only with HP-branded printers."
